Tsushima Nagura

対馬 – Tsushima

Quarried on Tsushima island, west of Nagasaki. There are two mines located in the same general area, one within the mountains on land and one under the water just off the coast. These stones are known to be hard and fine, often used as nagura rather than a whetstone itself. When used as a nagura, the slurry tends to be somewhere between Mejiro and Koma nagura. It is difficult to distinguish the ocean variety, often called Ocean Blue, from the mountain variety, often called Mountain Tsushima. The mine is no longer active.

I think these stones are interesting and quite unique within the JNAT offerings. I have both the large whetstone and smaller nagura versions which are wonderful to use together.

Tsushima whetstone as a legitimately tomo A very hard nagura, easily pulling up almost only host slurry one my 4/5 stones. It is a beautiful piece and works particularly well with the Tsushima whetstone as a legitimately tomo nagura.
